Tips on writing a powerful cover letter

In this section you will find insights into what makes a cover letter really standout and what you can do to increase the effectiveness of your cover letter.

When applying for a job on propertyroles you have the option of adding a cover letter to your application and we would highly recommend that you do this.  You can either attach a pre saved version or type one in the text box provided.  Regardless of which option you choose there are a few specific tips that increase your chances for success.

1, Ensure at all times your letter is professional and well presented.

Even if you use the text box provided you should still format it correctly and write it as professionally as you can using paragraphs and full sentences.  Also ensure you date your cover letter and put your name and contact details clearly on the letter.

2, Always address your letter.

Often you may not know the name of the person who will be assessing and receiving your application.  However it is still important to address your cover letter to the organisation and put To Whom It May Concern as the addressee.  Then you can start your letter with Dear Sir/Madam.  In the circumstances of not knowing who to address the letter to this allows you to add an individual feel to your letter.

3, Highlight the reason for the letter in the first line.

Tell them that you are submitting an application for the "Property Funds analyst" position advertised on 16th July 2008 on propertyroles.com, for example.  Even though this may seem like you are stating the obvious employers often print off Resumes and cover letters and with so many they could lose track of where the application came from and which position it specifically related to.

4, Be precise in your letter.

Employers read many cover letters and you need to tell them exactly what they need to hear in the shortest time possible.  Some say employers only spend 30 seconds on your cover letter so you need to really catch their interest.  In almost all circumstances you should be keeping to a minimum of 3 to 4 paragraphs and, unless directed to, you should never exceed one page.

5, Tailor your cover letter to the position advertised and tell employers how you meet their listed requirements.

This is crucial because it shows them that you are thinking specifically about the role and that you have taken the time to highlight relevant information they need to know.  You are also selling yourself, which is vital to any job application.  Even though this information is clear in your Resume it is important to pro actively tell them how you meet their requirements and how you can benefit their company rather than relying on them to read it for themselves.

6, Finish your letter with a call to action.  Leave the potential employer with a desire to contact you and a reason to.

For example, "Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing from you.  If you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact me."  When applying for advertised roles it is not wise to try and follow them up in a few days time, this is likely to annoy them.  This is because employers will often have a procedure for collating, processing and responding to applications.  Always refer to the "My Job Applications" menu in the signed in section of propertyroles.com, employers use this section to update and manage the ongoing status of applications and of course keep checking your email for any direct responses.
